Schanigärten in Vienna: 2,993 permitted café terraces by district and street
Schanigarten is Vienna’s word for a café or restaurant terrace on the pavement, in a parking lane or in a pedestrian zone. The city’s open data lists 2,993 permitted ones with 72,078 m² between them — counted here by district and street.
In short: The City of Vienna’s open dataset lists 2,993 permitted Schanigärten (sidewalk café terraces) with 72,078 m² between them (retrieved 12 October 2026), the most in Innere Stadt (553); 37 % sit fully or partly in a parking lane. On public ground or next to the street, a café terrace may as a rule open from 8 am to 11 pm (Trade Regulation Act, § 76a).

Ranked by count. Innere Stadt leads with 553, ahead of Landstraße (203) and Leopoldstadt (201). Per square kilometre, Josefstadt, Neubau and Mariahilf follow Innere Stadt. Each row shows the area and how many of the terraces sit in a parking lane.
When the parking lane becomes a terrace
Fully or partly in a parking lane: 1,118 of the 2,993 Schanigärten, 37 %. Street space where cars would otherwise park becomes a terrace; the city’s urban planning department describes the parking lane as the place that is left when the pavement is too narrow for tables and chairs. The share is highest in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (64 %), Ottakring (57 %) and Margareten (56 %) and lowest in Innere Stadt (22 %) — counted for districts with at least 50 Schanigärten. Another 298 sit in pedestrian or shared zones, most of them in Innere Stadt (153), Neubau (45) and Mariahilf (37).
Not every spot is allowed: on loading zones, disabled parking bays, taxi ranks, fire-brigade access routes or charging bays for electric vehicles a Schanigarten is not permitted (Vienna’s act on the use of public ground, tariff D 2). On the pavement, according to the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, at least two metres have to stay free next to it, 2.5 to 3.5 metres in shopping streets.
The streets with the most Schanigärten
Counted by the address of the venue, across district borders. Innere Stadt has the most Schanigärten but no street in the top ten: its 553 spread across 165 streets and squares, none with more than 15.
Life at the door, voices under the window
A Schanigarten in front of the house means both on a summer evening. On public ground or right next to the street, a café terrace may as a rule open from 8 am to 11 pm; where it is neither on public ground nor next to a public road, for instance in a courtyard, from 9 am to 10 pm. The operator has to forbid talking louder than normal conversation, singing and music, and post that at every entrance (Trade Regulation Act, § 76a). In summer the city allows longer hours by ordinance: in 2026, café terraces in selected areas could stay open until midnight from 11 June to 12 September — in the whole of the 1st, 10th, 13th, 14th, 16th, 18th, 19th, 21st and 23rd districts and in parts of eight others. Areas and dates change from year to year.
It also works the other way: in quiet streets the authority can set 10 pm or even 7 pm because of the noise, says the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. Which hours apply to a particular venue is in its permit, not in this dataset. Anyone viewing a flat above a street full of Schanigärten does well to come back on a warm evening too.
All year round
Since 1 September 2023 a Schanigarten may stay all year, and the separate winter rules are gone. The months it is permitted for are set in its permit — this dataset does not know them. In winter 2024/25, according to the city, more than 2,200 Schanigärten were in operation.
What this dataset is — and what it is not
Since the end of August 2026 the city has published the currently permitted areas for Schanigärten as open data, updated daily. An entry is a permitted area, not a venue; the city places it with a point at the address, and several entries often share one point: 369 of the 2,579 points carry more than one. At 155 points there is a terrace the city lists as “private ground”; what exactly that means, it does not explain.
The city itself speaks of more than 4,300 Schanigärten (press service, March 2026); the dataset lists 2,993, and the city does not say where the difference comes from. An empty spot on the map therefore means no permitted area in this register — not that nobody sits outside there. Whether terraces in courtyards or at a Heuriger are included, the city does not explain either.
