EV charging in Vienna: 674 Wien Energie charging sites, district by district

Where Vienna charges in public: 674 Wien Energie charging sites on public ground, counted by district from the city’s open data — plus which plug fits, what charging costs, when you may park at the bay and what applies at home.

City dataset · retrieved 12 October 2026

In short: The City of Vienna’s open dataset lists 674 Wien Energie charging sites on public ground in all 23 districts, 16 of them for fast charging; Mariahilf has the most per square kilometre (11.7). According to the city, about 4,030 charging points of all operators are publicly or semi-publicly accessible in Vienna (dataset retrieved 12 October 2026; city figures as of October 2026). Kerbside posts have Type 2 sockets at 11 kW and you bring your own cable; fast chargers have CCS. Without a contract, Wien Energie charges 0.56 euros per kilowatt hour (as of 12 October 2026).

What the dataset shows — and what it does not

The city publishes its electric charging stations on public ground as open data, updated daily — the Wien Energie network. Here that comes to 674 charging sites in all 23 districts. Entries no more than 15 metres apart (60 metres at the same address) count as one site; how many cars can charge there at the same time is not something the dataset reliably says. So this page counts sites, not charging points.

It is not every charger in the city. The City of Vienna counts about 4,030 publicly and semi-publicly accessible charging points of all operators; in public space there are about 1,200 standard charging points of up to 22 kW and 42 fast-charging points in five fast-charging parks. Wien Energie itself speaks of more than 2,500 publicly accessible charging stations in the greater Vienna area and more than 900 new charging points in 2025 alone. The figures measure different things — charging points rather than sites, the greater area rather than the city, semi-public locations rather than only the street. Read together: the open dataset is a reliable slice, not the whole network.

Charging sites by district

Ranked by density, not by count: the count mostly says how large a district is. Mariahilf has 11.7 charging sites per square kilometre, Neubau 10.6 and Alsergrund 10.1. In 3 of the 23 districts there is not even one per square kilometre — the sites there lie further apart. The most in total: Donaustadt with 74, also the largest district by area.

Fast charging

16 Wien Energie sites are fast chargers — recognisable by the City’s label (HPC, Schnellladestation, Fast) or by at least 50 kW according to OpenStreetMap; 8 of them are in a car park. The City’s dataset has no output figures; where OpenStreetMap knows them, the map shows them. The City of Vienna names five fast-charging parks with 150 or 400 kW and 42 fast-charging points between them on public ground; according to a report by electrive.net, Wien Energie added four new fast-charging hubs with 28 charging points of up to 400 kW in 2025.

Other operators

The city’s dataset only knows Wien Energie. Other operators come from OpenStreetMap, the free map kept up by volunteers: 81 charging sites of other operators; 10 of them are for customers only; 31 have fast chargers (according to OpenStreetMap 50 kW or more, a fast-charging plug, or named as such). Wien Energie sites are taken from the city’s dataset only, so nothing counts twice. This addition is not complete, which is why the table lists it separately and the ranking does not use it.

Will my car fit?

The kerbside posts have Type 2 sockets and charge at 11 kW, two cars per post; you bring your own charging cable. At the fast chargers the cable is fixed to the post, with a CCS plug. Older cars are the ones that may not fit: older Nissan Leafs fast-charge only via CHAdeMO, a plug new fast chargers offer less and less, and many older plug-in hybrids charge on one phase only, at 3.7 to 7.2 kW — even at an 11 kW post.

How fast it goes is decided by the weakest link: post, cable or car. One example from the ADAC car test: a Kia EV3 with a 58 kWh battery charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 29 minutes at a fast charger; at an 11 kW wallbox it needs about six hours for a full charge.

Paying and parking

Without a contract, you pay at Wien Energie stations by QR code and credit card, currently 0.56 euros per kilowatt hour. With a Wien Energie charging card, a kilowatt hour has cost between 0.36 and 0.43 euros since 1 October 2026, depending on the monthly fee — the same at a kerbside post and at a fast charger. Staying plugged in at a kerbside post for more than five hours costs 5 cents a minute in these tariffs, at most 25 euros; between 10 pm and 8 am that fee does not apply. This holds for contracts from 1 April 2026; prices as of 12 October 2026.

From 8 am to 10 pm, only electric cars that are actually charging may stand at Vienna’s charging bays. While charging, parking there is free; once the car is full, it has to go — the 15 minutes often mentioned are goodwill, not a right. Otherwise electric cars pay the normal fee in Vienna’s short-stay parking zone too.

Charging at home

In an owner-occupied flat, the other owners have been deemed to agree to a slow charging point at your own parking space since 2022 if, properly notified, they do not object in writing within two months (§ 16 (5) WEG); in building procedures since 15 July 2026, new residential buildings with more than three parking spaces have to pre-wire half of them, fit the rest with conduits and install at least one charging point. According to the explanatory notes to the law, 5.5 kW is slow charging in any case, 11 kW probably no longer. Tenants do not have this shortcut: they have to notify the landlord of the wallbox; if the landlord does not refuse within two months, consent is deemed given (where the Tenancy Act applies in full).

The federal funding for private wallboxes (“E-Mobilität für Private 2025”) is exhausted and has ended; Vienna adds up to 500 euros per charging point only as part of a funded building renovation (Sockel- or Totalsanierung) (as of October 2026). The same lines, with their date, are in the Azima report for an address, under funding and rules.

And at your address?

The address card names the nearest charging site when it is at most ten minutes away on foot, with output and plug where they are known — further away it deliberately shows nothing. On the map, all charging sites can be switched on as a layer.

Before you buy a flat, the charging point round the corner is one question and what the viewing cannot show is another: sun per room in December, summer heat and noise at the facade.

Frequently asked

How many public charging points are there in Vienna?

The City of Vienna counts about 4,030 publicly and semi-publicly accessible charging points of all operators; in public space there are about 1,200 standard charging points of up to 22 kW and 42 fast-charging points in five fast-charging parks (as of October 2026). The city’s open dataset lists the Wien Energie network on public ground: 674 charging sites in all 23 districts, retrieved 12 October 2026. One site can have several charging points.

Where can I fast-charge in Vienna?

16 Wien Energie sites are fast chargers, by the City’s label or with at least 50 kW according to OpenStreetMap: Beethovenplatz (1st district, in a car park), Haussteinstraße 7 (2nd district), Erdberger Lände (3rd district), Erdberger Mais (3rd district, in a car park), Erdbergstraße (3rd district), Margaretengürtel (5th district), Gerhard-Bronner-Straße 2 (10th district, in a car park), Simmeringer Hauptstraße (11th district), Sagedergasse 13 (12th district), Währinger Gürtel (18th district), Heiligenstädter Lände 13 (19th district, in a car park), Bruno-Kreisky-Platz 1 (22nd district, in a car park), Wagramer Straße 79 (22nd district, in a car park), Wintzingeroderstraße 10 (22nd district, in a car park), Brunner Straße (23rd district) and Liesinger Platz 1A (23rd district, in a car park). The city names five fast-charging parks with 150 or 400 kW on public ground. OpenStreetMap adds 31 sites with fast chargers, without any claim to completeness.

Which district has the most charging sites?

The most in total: Donaustadt, with 74 Wien Energie charging sites — also the largest district by area. Per square kilometre Mariahilf leads with 11.7, ahead of Neubau (10.6) and Alsergrund (10.1).

Why does this page count sites rather than charging points?

Because the dataset does not reliably say: it lists entries with their own identifier, but the city gives different totals for public space. Entries no more than 15 metres apart (60 metres at the same address) therefore count as one site here.

How current are the figures?

The city updates the dataset daily; this page shows the retrieval of 12 October 2026. The city’s overall figures are as published on wien.gv.at (as of October 2026).

Which plug fits Vienna’s charging posts?

The kerbside posts have Type 2 sockets and charge at 11 kW; you bring your own charging cable. Fast chargers have a fixed cable with a CCS plug. Older Nissan Leafs fast-charge only via CHAdeMO, and many older plug-in hybrids charge on one phase only, at 3.7 to 7.2 kW.

What does charging at Wien Energie cost?

Without a contract 0.56 euros per kilowatt hour, paid by QR code and credit card; with a charging card, between 0.36 and 0.43 euros since 1 October 2026, depending on the monthly fee — the same at a kerbside post and at a fast charger (as of 12 October 2026).

May I stay at the charging bay once the car is full?

No. From 8 am to 10 pm only electric cars that are actually charging may stand there; while charging, parking is free. The 15 minutes often mentioned afterwards are goodwill, not a right — Austria’s Supreme Administrative Court ruled in 2023 that the exemption ends with the charging.

Can I install a wallbox in my owner-occupied flat?

For a slow charging point at your own parking space, the other owners have been deemed to agree since 2022 if, properly notified, they do not object in writing within two months (§ 16 (5) WEG); according to the explanatory notes, 5.5 kW is slow charging in any case, 11 kW probably no longer. Tenants notify the landlord of the wallbox; if the landlord does not refuse within two months, consent is deemed given.

Is there funding for a wallbox?

The federal funding for private wallboxes (“E-Mobilität für Private 2025”) is exhausted and has ended; Vienna adds up to 500 euros per charging point only as part of a funded building renovation (Sockel- or Totalsanierung) (as of October 2026).
