Noise and quiet in Vienna: where you can actually sleep
No listing mentions it, and it decides how you live: how loud is it at the front door, and does it stay loud at night? These are the official figures — district by district.
Everyone viewing a flat asks about the rent and the transport links. Almost nobody asks how it sounds at eleven at night — and that is the thing you cannot renovate away. Since 2002 the EU has required every large city to map its noise; Vienna does so for road, rail and industry. We read that mapping for every district and every neighbourhood, and translate it into what it means at the front door.
The quietest districts

The gap over the city: aircraft
The official aircraft contour stops south-east of Vienna, around Schwechat. Over the city itself it shows nothing — and yet aircraft are plainly audible over large parts of Vienna on approach. Both are true: Lden is an annual average, and a single overflight disappears in it. That is why no VLM page will ever tell you a place has "no aircraft noise". Where we cannot see, we say so.
And then there are the long-term roadworks
Noise mapping describes the normal year. It does not know that a street is being dug up for the next two years. Vienna currently lists dozens of roadworks running longer than six months — nobody mentions them at a Sunday viewing. VLM shows one as a dated note on the place card when it is within walking distance, and never in the score: a building site is temporary, a place is not.

Which district in Vienna is the quietest?
Measured as the share of district area above the 55 dB reporting threshold, Hernals comes out lowest at 10%, followed by Penzing and Hietzing. Note the City of Vienna ranks by affected RESIDENTS per 1,000 inhabitants, which can put the order differently — both are correct, they answer different questions.
Which district is the loudest?
By area share it is Brigittenau (70%), then Leopoldstadt and Innere Stadt. Motorways and rail corridors weigh heavier here than busy shopping streets.
Is aircraft noise included?
No — and that is the honest gap. The official mapping under the EU directive covers road, rail and industry; its aircraft contour ends south-east of Vienna near Schwechat and shows nothing over the city itself. Lden is an annual average in which a single overflight disappears. So a low value never means "no aircraft noise".
Is this measured?
No. It is calculated with the CNOSSOS-EU model from traffic volumes, speeds, surfaces and building geometry — the method the EU prescribes. It is not a microphone at your window, and it says nothing about your neighbours, the courtyard or the floor you live on.
What are Vienna’s designated quiet areas?
The City formally designates areas that stay below the threshold and must be protected. 10 of them show up along our neighbourhoods: Landschaftsschutzgebiet Prater, Landschaftsschutzgebiet Favoriten, Landschaftsschutzgebiet Hietzing, Landschaftsschutzgebiet Hernals. Living next to one is a genuine argument — with an official stamp.
