Everyone viewing a flat asks about the rent and the transport links. Almost nobody asks how it sounds at eleven at night — and that is the thing you cannot renovate away. Since 2002 the EU has required every large city to map its noise; Vienna does so for road, rail and industry. We read that mapping for every district and every neighbourhood, and translate it into what it means at the front door.

Counted by address
District area also includes water, woodland, railway tracks and motorway verges where nobody lives. The address comes closer to the question of how loud it is where people actually live. For each of the City of Vienna’s 292,002 addresses, this checks whether the official noise map shows road noise of 65 dB or more within 25 metres (Lden, the third of five bands). Across Vienna that applies to 18.7% of addresses.

Why 25 metres: the noise map leaves buildings out, and an address point almost always sits inside the house. 25 metres reach from any point of a Viennese perimeter block to its street façade, but not to the next parallel street — this is also how Azima reads every single address. What counts is therefore the loudest spot close to the house, usually the street façade; a flat facing the courtyard can be several bands quieter. The gap over the city: aircraft
The official aircraft contour stops south-east of Vienna, around Schwechat. Over the city itself it shows nothing — and yet aircraft are plainly audible over large parts of Vienna on approach. Both are true: Lden is an annual average, and a single overflight disappears in it. That is why no VLM page will ever tell you a place has "no aircraft noise". Where we cannot see, we say so.
For one specific flat: check the noise at the facade, the sun per room and the summer heat before you sign.
And then there are the long-term roadworks
Noise mapping describes the normal year. It does not know that a street is being dug up for the next two years. Vienna currently lists dozens of roadworks running longer than six months — nobody mentions them at a Sunday viewing. VLM shows one as a dated note on the place card when it is within walking distance, and never in the score: a building site is temporary, a place is not.

Which district in Vienna is the quietest?
Measured as the share of district area above the 55 dB reporting threshold, Hietzing comes out lowest at 11%, followed by Penzing and Hernals. Counted by address, Donaustadt is quietest: only 7.6% of its addresses have road noise of 65 dB or more within 25 metres on the official map, against 18.7% across Vienna. Note the City of Vienna ranks by affected RESIDENTS per 1,000 inhabitants, which can put the order differently — each count is correct, they answer different questions.
Which district is the loudest?
It depends on what you count. By area share it is Brigittenau (65%), then Leopoldstadt and Innere Stadt — motorways and rail corridors weigh heavier here than busy shopping streets, and water and woodland count too. Counted by address, Neubau comes first: at 56.4% of its addresses the official map shows road noise of 65 dB or more within 25 metres, against 18.7% across Vienna. The City of Vienna ranks by affected residents, which can look different again.
Is aircraft noise included?
No — and that is the honest gap. The official mapping under the EU directive covers road, rail and industry; its aircraft contour covers — measured against all 99 Grätzl — not a single one, and even its outermost zone (from 55 dB Lden) starts east of the inhabited city. Lden is an annual average in which a single overflight disappears. So a low value never means "no aircraft noise".
Is this measured?
No. It is calculated with the CNOSSOS-EU model from traffic volumes, speeds, surfaces and building geometry — the method the EU prescribes. It is not a microphone at your window, and it says nothing about your neighbours, the courtyard or the floor you live on.
What are Vienna’s designated quiet areas?
The City formally designates areas that stay below the threshold and must be protected. 9 of them show up along our neighbourhoods: Landschaftsschutzgebiet Favoriten, Landschaftsschutzgebiet Hietzing, Landschaftsschutzgebiet Hernals, Landschaftsschutzgebiet Währing. Living next to one is a genuine argument — with an official stamp.
