Short and honest: nobody lives here yet. On 44 hectares of the former freight station, around 6,500 flats for around 16,000 people are to be built by 2035, around a ten-hectare park. Construction of the first residential buildings starts in 2027.

The Nordwestbahnhof was last a freight transshipment site; according to the City of Vienna, a district with around 6,500 flats for around 16,000 people and 4,700 jobs is to be built on the 44 hectares by 2035. Demolition is to be finished in 2028, and construction of the first residential buildings starts in 2027.
The middle becomes a park: the Grüne Mitte, ten hectares, car-free, with paths for walking and cycling. Three new education sites follow, with kindergartens, primary and middle schools and an upper grammar school; the first education campus is being built from 2026 and is to be finished in 2028.
What works surprisingly well
The neighbourhood is planned without through traffic: cul-de-sacs with underground garages, no cars across the area — and the ten hectares in the middle stay park.
The city is already there around it: trams 2, 12 and O stop at Traisengasse, the 5 at Nordwestbahnstraße; from around 2029 the 12 is to run through the new neighbourhood via the extended Wallensteinstraße.
What you consciously accept
It takes time: the first residential buildings start in 2027, and the neighbourhood is to be finished in 2035. If you move in early, you live next to building plots for years.
The U-Bahn is not at the door: the U6 at Dresdner Straße is about twelve minutes on foot from the middle of the site. And the surroundings are warm and not entirely quiet — at Handelskai the summer-heat index is 65 out of 100 (Vienna median 56), quiet 6.7 (median 6.8).
