Whether the bike replaces the car comes down to the network at your door: continuous cycle paths, short distances, flat terrain. We ranked Vienna by the real cycle-path segments around each address.
95 cycle-path segments · a dense network, short trips
Ranked from open data (City of Vienna OGD, OpenStreetMap, Wiener Linien, Statistics Austria) — not a tourist tip list.
Vienna is flat, compact and has noticeably densified its cycle network in recent years — but very unevenly. In some Grätzl a continuous cycle path carries you to the centre without a single detour; in others the lane ends after 200 metres in mixed traffic. We count the marked cycle-path segments around each Grätzl (OpenStreetMap).
This means the separated, marked network — not every street where cycling is allowed. Unsurprisingly the central districts and the Donaukanal axes lead: short distances plus dense infrastructure. Towards the edge the network thins out, but the routes there are greener and calmer anyway.
Averaged over a district it blurs — the question is your own route. These Grätzl have the densest cycle network:
The trade-off: the densest cycle network sits centrally, where there is also the most going on. If you prefer it quieter, the edge has fewer built-out cycle paths but more relaxed routes through the green and along the Danube.
The “Cycle routes” map layer shows the marked network for all of Vienna, and the “bike-friendly” search brings well-connected areas to the front. For the flat hunt it pays to check whether a continuous axis towards the centre or the Danube is within reach.

The densest marked cycle network lies centrally and along the Donaukanal: out front are compact districts like Wieden, Leopoldstadt, the Innere Stadt and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. There the distances are short and the cycle infrastructure dense.
Is Vienna a good city for cycling?
Broadly yes: Vienna is flat and compact, and the network is growing. But it is unevenly spread — central areas and the Danube axes are very well served, while the edge has more gaps. Our value shows the marked cycle-path segments per area.
Can you live without a car in Vienna?
In most areas, comfortably — thanks to public transport and a growing cycle network. For car-free living, look at both: the transit score in the Living Score and the cycle network here. Centrally located Grätzl usually score well on both.
