Once around the Alte Donau

You step off the U1 and almost stand in the water: the Alte Donau begins just behind the station. From here you follow the shore — pedal boats, ducks, the Gänsehäufel, and behind it the towers of the Donau-City. It’s the closest to lakeside living Vienna has: a swim before work, the sun over the water in the evening. If you long for summer, openness and open water, this loop already feels a little like a holiday.

1. 1
   From the U-Bahn to the water

   Step off the U1 and you almost stand at the lake: the Alte Donau begins just behind the station. In the evening people get out with swim bags — everyday life at the water, not a Sunday exception.

2. 2
   The lakeside promenade

   Sailing boats, pedal boats, ducks — and behind them the towers of the Donau-City. This mix of leisure and metropolis exists nowhere else in Vienna.

3. 3
   The Gänsehäufel

   Vienna’s most famous bathing island. Live here and in summer a lido is your neighbourhood facility — and in winter a still, wide shore.

   Allotments at the water

   Whole rows of little houses with a jetty view — the other way of living at the Alte Donau. Idyllic, but with its own rules: leasehold ground, often only limited winter use.

   The quiet way back

   Back at the water: allotment rows, reeds, hardly a car — you can’t hear the city any more. That’s how still the Alte Donau is once the swimmers are gone. The loud Wagramer Straße stays the way home, but here at the shore it never begins.

Who is this walk for?

A walk for anyone to whom water, openness and summer life mean more than lanes and culture — and who turns a balcony with a lake view into a home. In summer the jetty is the front garden, the lido the living room.

Good to know

You usually live a row back from the shore — between water and flat there’s often Wagramer Straße, multi-lane and loud.

And the water has a season: from October to April the restaurants shut and the paths fall still. Love the summer, and you take the quiet winter with it.

Method & honesty

The line is the shortest walking path over Vienna’s real pedestrian network (OpenStreetMap, ODbL) between hand-set waypoints along the shore paths — real paths, not estimated geometry. Distance and step count follow from the measured length (typical stride 0.75 m, as a range). Transit stops, trees and water proximity are read along the line from open data; proximity to main roads is a spatial proxy from the road class, not a measured noise value. Deliberately NOT included: an elevation profile, benches, metre-by-metre shade, water quality.
