You step off the U2 in the middle of the quarter, and a few steps on lies the lake — the heart of a district drawn up from scratch. From here you follow the lakeside promenade, through the young lake park, back through the residential rows. Not a grown neighbourhood but a planned quarter in the making: plenty of space, water and green, but far out and still young. If you long for space and a lake at your door and can live with the edge, this is an honest taster.

Good to know
The Seestadt sits at the outermost city edge: the U2 connects directly, but the centre takes a while — for short, spontaneous city errands you are far out here.
And the quarter is still young: some ground floors stand empty, the trees are small, the grown neighbourhood is (still) missing. Much only comes with the years.
The walk in chapters
- 1From the U-Bahn to the lake
The U2 terminates in the middle of the quarter, and a few steps on lies the lake: a purpose-built body of water as the heart of it. New living by the water — planned, not grown, but already lively.
- 2The lakeside promenade
Wide shore paths, jetties, benches, bathing spots in summer. All around the apartment blocks rise. You notice that everything here was thought out at once: water, paths, living — of one piece.
- 3The lake park
At the northern end green opens up: meadows, young trees, play areas. Much is still young — the trees small, the greenery freshly planted. In a few years there will be shade here where today there is sun.
- 4Through the residential rows
Back through the streets: wide pavements, ground floors with shops, a lot of new build in a calm tone. Some retail units still stand empty — the quarter is only filling up. Whether it already feels like home, everyone decides differently.
- 5The price of the edge
Back at the U2. From here you reach the city directly, but not quickly — the Seestadt sits at the outermost edge. In return you get space, water and green as you could hardly afford further in.

Method & honesty
The line is the shortest walking path over Vienna’s real pedestrian network (OpenStreetMap, ODbL) between hand-set waypoints along the lakeside promenade and the residential streets — real paths, not estimated geometry. Distance and step count follow from the measured length (typical stride 0.75 m, as a range). Green share, trees and water proximity are read along the line from open data; proximity to main roads is a spatial proxy from the road class, not a measured noise value. TIME-CRITICAL: the Seestadt keeps growing — the liveliness of ground floors and the construction state change; check on site. Deliberately NOT included: building sites, finished infrastructure, an elevation profile.

How long is the walk?
Around 5.36 km — depending on stride, about 6,700–7,500 steps. Pure walking time roughly 71 minutes, with a break at the lake or a summer swim as long as you like. Flat.
How far is the centre?
The U2 runs directly, but the Seestadt sits at the outermost city edge — reaching the inner city takes noticeably longer than from a central location. That is the price for space and the lake.
Is the lake really for swimming?
Yes — the lake is man-made but has real bathing spots and shapes the quarter’s everyday in summer. In winter it is a still, wide expanse.
