You start at the loud, colourful Würstelprater, and a few steps on the Hauptallee begins: dead straight, lined with old chestnuts, meadows and floodplain woods left and right. The further you go, the quieter and wilder it gets — until the green reaches almost to the Danube. Not a walk for sights, but one that shows what it means to live by the Prater: dense city life in the Stuwerviertel, and Vienna’s largest recreation area right at the door. If you want green and openness without moving to the city edge, this loop joins the two.

A walk for anyone to whom green and openness matter but who doesn’t want to move to the city edge — families, runners, home office. You feel here the rare thing: living in the middle of the city and still having Vienna’s biggest park as a front garden.
Good to know
The park is huge, but the living sits at its edge: between the houses and the green run busy axes like the Ausstellungsstraße or the Lassallestraße, which can be loud.
And the Prater has two faces: around the Würstelprater there is a lot going on in summer and in the evening — the calm only begins a way into the avenue.

At the Praterstern the loud, colourful funfair begins — the Ferris wheel, music, snack stands. A few steps on it tips over: the stalls end, the Hauptallee begins. You leave the city behind without leaving it.

Four kilometres of dead-straight chestnut avenue, meadows and floodplain woods left and right: the Hauptallee is Vienna’s green artery for running, cycling, strolling. Live by the Prater and you have this as a front garden — openness rare in the middle of a city.
- 3The green Prater
Further out it grows wilder: floodplain woods, the Heustadelwasser, old trees, hardly any bustle. Here the Prater is no longer a fairground but a piece of nature — the green reaches almost to the Danube. You forget the inner city is only minutes away.
- 4Back to the residential edge
Back towards the Praterstern, where the living begins: the Stuwerviertel, the Ausstellungsstraße, Gründerzeit houses with the park at the door. Here you live dense and urban — and still have Vienna’s biggest green right around the corner.

Method & honesty
The line is the shortest walking path over Vienna’s real pedestrian network (OpenStreetMap, ODbL) between hand-set waypoints along the Hauptallee and the park paths — real paths, not estimated geometry. Distance and step count follow from the measured length (typical stride 0.75 m, as a range). Green share and trees are read along the line from open data; proximity to main roads is a spatial proxy from the road class, not a measured noise value. The walk takes the park as the green neighbour of the living, not the amusement park as a sight. Deliberately NOT included: an elevation profile, the funfair’s opening hours, metre-by-metre shade.

Around 5.62 km — depending on stride, about 7,000–7,900 steps. Pure walking time roughly 75 minutes, with a break in the green as long as you like. Flat, ideal for running or cycling too.
Does the walk go through the fairground?
Only at the start: the Würstelprater is the loud opening, then the green Prater begins. It is about LIVING by the park, not the Ferris wheel — the calm of the Hauptallee is the real reason to live here.
Is it reachable by public transport?
Yes, very well: at the Praterstern the U1, U2 and several S-Bahn and tram lines stop. That is exactly what makes the green work for everyday life — a big park and fast transit at once.
