Vienna in motion as an app: the live timetable on your home screen

All of Vienna’s public transport on one map, with its own icon next to your apps: Vienna in motion installs on iPhone, Android and computers, without an app store, without an account and for free. It then opens without the browser bar, shows your station first and, after the first time, starts without a connection too.

In short: Vienna in motion is a web app: on iPhone in Safari via ⋯ → Share → “Add to Home Screen”, on Android in Chrome via ⋮ → “Install app”. Free, without a store and without an account.

What you get

Its own icon
On your home screen next to your other apps: one tap and every metro, S-Bahn, tram and bus in Vienna is moving.
Full screen
No address bar, no tabs: the map gets the whole screen.
Your station first
Tap “Remember as my station” on a stop’s departure board and the next departures are at the top every time you open the app.
Without a connection
After opening it once online, the app also starts offline, with lines and vehicles by timetable. The base map with streets and names, real-time departures, disruptions and the address search need a connection.
Updates itself
No store updates: every start loads the latest version.
No account, no ads, no tracking
Nothing to sign up for. What the app remembers stays on your device.

1Open Vienna in motion in Chromeviennalivingmap.com/en/live-transit/
2Tap “Install” in the sheet, or ⋮ at the top rightWhere Chrome offers the installation itself, the app row in the map’s sheet shows an “Install” button: one tap is enough.
3Choose “Install app” and confirmOn some phones the entry reads “Add to Home screen”. Samsung Internet and Firefox offer the same in their menu, worded slightly differently.

On a computer

Chrome and Edge show an install icon at the right of the address bar; click it, then “Install”. Vienna in motion then opens in a window of its own. Safari on a Mac: in the “File” menu, choose “Add to Dock”.

What the app does not do

It does not track vehicles: where a tram moves on the map is computed from the timetable; the departures at a stop are real. It sends no notifications. And without a connection the base map, real-time data and disruptions are missing.

Frequently asked

Does the Vienna in motion app cost anything?

No. No purchase, no subscription, no ads.

Why is Vienna in motion not in the App Store or on Google Play?

Because it does not need a store: Vienna in motion is a web app (PWA). The browser installs it straight from viennalivingmap.com, and updates arrive with every start instead of through a store.

Does the app work without an internet connection?

After opening it once online, yes, with lines and vehicles by timetable. The base map with streets and names, real-time departures, disruptions and the address search need a connection.

Does the app show Vienna’s public transport in real time?

The departures at a stop, yes: real time from the Wiener Linien (the S-Bahn by timetable). Where a vehicle is on the map is computed from the timetable, not measured by GPS.

Does the app collect data about me?

No. What it remembers (your station, recent routes, light or dark) stays on your device. Your location never leaves it; for real-time departures only the platform numbers of that stop go to the Wiener Linien.

Is this the same app as Vienna Living Map?

No, a separate one: Vienna in motion has its own icon and runs next to Vienna Living Map, the housing map. Both can be installed side by side.

How do I remove the app?

iPhone: press and hold the icon and choose “Remove App”. Android: press and hold the icon and choose “Uninstall”, or drag it to “Remove”.
