This very map is walkable in the “Tech” tab of “Vienna in numbers” in the app — the whole system map with every detail →

People don’t think in “transit = 0.4”. They think in wishes. Emotion is the input, places are the output, data is the truth. The AI only translates — it never invents a score. The goal is one sentence: “That’s exactly how I’d have described it myself.”

What Vienna Living Map does

From a hunch to an address.

Search

Wishes, not filters

One universal search understands addresses, housing wishes, rankings, budgets, similarity and proximity — without ever picking a mode.

Score

Living Score 0–100

Six dimensions, six perspectives. The same data, weighted differently through a family, urban or home-office lens.

Light

3D light vignette

The real surroundings of an address — actual building heights, trees, terrain; the sun moves, the shadows move with it.

Story

A living magazine per Grätzl

“How it feels to live there” instead of “what’s there” — rhythm, light, people, the decision.

Decide

Compare · PDF · Diary

Up to four places (“who wins where”), a PDF exposé and a private housing diary — on your device only.

Discover

Quiz · ~20 data guides

A Grätzl quiz, sausage stands, Beisl, Heurigen, cool living, “Vienna in numbers” — each with a real ranking.

The Living Score

Six dimensions,
one number with a reason.

No district is objectively the best. The score doesn’t say “good or bad” but who a place suits — depending on perspective. Every number opens up to its dimensions.

Atmosphere as data

Every place has a fingerprint — like Spotify audio features.

Eight axes capture a place’s character as a profile, not a category. From them come stories, moodboards and motion that really differ per Grätzl.

Radical honesty — written into the code

The opposite of real-estate marketing.

Story angles for your reporting

Three ready-made narratives.

Angle 1 · Privacy

A Vienna tool with no cookie banner at all

How do you build a useful city tool that needs no account, no cookies and no tracking profile — and can still show anonymous statistics? GDPR not as an obligation, but as a design principle.

Angle 2 · Open Data

The quality of life of all Vienna from open data

One person, ~43,000 open data points, every Grätzl and every address scored — built on City of Vienna OGD, OpenStreetMap, GeoSphere and Statistics Austria. What’s possible with public knowledge.

Angle 3 · AI

An AI whose selling point is: it decides nothing

Against the “AI does everything” trend: here the AI only translates language into weights and facts into prose. Ranking is deterministic, a gate rejects clichés. AI that disappears.

For numbers on a specific Grätzl, quotes or an exclusive early look: get in touch.

The method — cleanly explained

How open data becomes a score.

1 · Collect

Open sources

~15 build scripts + monthly cron jobs pull City of Vienna OGD, OpenStreetMap/Overpass, Wiener Linien, GeoSphere & Statistics Austria.

2 · Compute

Deterministic engine

Six dimensions weighted per perspective — the same formula for address, Grätzl and district, frozen by golden tests.

3 · Translate

AI as language only

Gemini turns wishes into weights and facts into prose — never rankings. A banned-words gate keeps the tone honest.

4 · Check

Quality after every deploy

Golden tests, voice QA across the story corpus, a live smoke test and a weekly image self-healing.

Precompute instead of runtime AI wherever the space is finite: everything district × perspective is generated once and stored as a static file — consistent in the PDF and the comparison, with no running cost. Runtime AI runs only for the infinite (arbitrary addresses) and is cached.

The data sources — all open, all cited

Built on public knowledge.

City of Vienna OGD

Districts, parks, schools, doctors, tree cadastre, zoning, climate analysis.

OpenStreetMap

Heurigen, dog zones, cafés, cycle routes, building heights, curated markets.

Wiener Linien

Stops & lines (GTFS).

GeoSphere Austria

Annual climate values + a visible warming trend.

Statistics Austria

House price index (price indexing).
